What Does an Oilfield Chaplain Do?

7/30/2017

1 Corinthians 1:26-27   For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called.  But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty;

I remember the day God spoke to me and said; “I’m going to make you an Oilfield Chaplain.”  I thought to myself I never heard of an oilfield Chaplain.  I googled Oilfield Chaplain and I never found anything on oilfield chaplains.  I thought this can’t be God there’s no such thing as an oilfield Chaplain.   As the next few weeks went by God confirmed His word through another person speaking it to me and through a dream He gave me.  I remember walking into my boss, Bob Wilson’s office that morning and telling him what God had revealed to me.  Bob just looked at me and jumped up out of his chair and said let’s do it, were gonna do it, you’re the oilfield chaplain.  He sat back down and then said; “What does an oilfield Chaplain do?  I said I’m not sure Bob, the only thing I really know anything about is cd ministries, maybe we should start a cd ministry for the oilfield workers.  So Receiving In God Ministries (or Rig Ministries for short) was birthed in Jan 2007 and in Feb we started producing Rig cd’s and passing them out to “Whosoever.”
As of this date July18, 2017 we have produced over  1 ½  million cd’s and given them away free of charge to “whosoever.”  What does an Oilfield Chaplain Do?  Well I’m still trying to figure that out! Webster’s dictionary definition of a Chaplain:
1: a clergyman in charge of a chapel  2: a clergyman officially attached to a branch of the military, to an institution, or to a family or court  3: a person chosen to conduct religious exercises (as at a meeting of a club or society) 4. A God appointed man to minster in the oil patch!   Ok I added number 4.
 Why would Bob & Stephanie Wilson appoint a truck driver as an oil field Chaplain?   Why would any businessman build a Church in the middle of his business?  Are they crazy or what?  The answer is yes!  They are crazy, crazy about Jesus!  They are crazy about their workers and their community.  Bob Wilson told me one day back in 2007 when Rig Ministries was just beginning that he cared more for the souls of his workers than he did for all the iron that he owns.  He would gladly trade everything he owns to see his family, friends, neighbors , and workers saved and living for Jesus!  And you know what I believed him and an oil field Chaplain was born.
Today when I google Oilfield Chaplain I find Oilfield Chaplains are popping up in a lot of different areas.  I see where the Baptist association in Oklahoma has oil field Chaplains.  I have even been to Texas and took some  Oil Field training  by the Southern Baptist of Oklahoma.   I also found oilfield Chaplains in North Dakota, Wyoming, Texas, Oklahoma,  Louisiana, California  and Montana. God is doing a new thing in the Oil Patch!  He is reaching out to whosoever and He is using a lot of different ways to do just that.
So what does an Oilfield Chaplain do?  I have found that my main job is to make myself available to listen to those who call or drop in with problems that they are facing.  Many times people just need to speak their problems out loud and the Holy Spirit that lives in them convicts them to do the right thing.  And when they can’t seem to find the answer then I can point them to Jesus.    I like to ask people a simple question.  If you died today would you go to heaven?  If you were standing at the gates of heaven and an Angel asked, why should I let you into heaven?  What would your answer be? Do you know the answer?  I hear lots of different answers but there is only one correct answer.  Jesus says in John Chapter 14 verse 6 I am the way, the truth, the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.  In  Romans Chapter 10 verses 9-13 it reads  that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God raised him from the dead., thou shall be saved.   For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.   For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.  For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.  For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Jesus is the answer to whatever problem or dilemma we have, like the old Charles Tinley song says we are to take our problems to the Lord, and leave them there!  Christ is the Answer!

 Ephesians Chapter 6: 10-18
Spiritual warfare is something every Christian will face if they are doing any kind of ministry for the Lord. Sometimes when the battles get really tough God reminds me of the song He gave me which is the theme song of Rig Ministries,  “Worth Fightin’ For” this is a song God gave me the lyrics too back before I ever begin my first tape ministry in October 2000.  In 2004 I shared these lyrics with my song writing partner Tom Caldwell and another friend of mine James Caban who at the time was my neighbor.  Between the three of us God used us to write this song that you hear on about every cd that is produced here at Rig Ministries.  Rig Ministries has now sent out close to 2 Million free cd’s.   These cd’s can be found in numerous places here in Southern IL., in every state in America, and several countries around the world.  From the feedback we receive every day we hear from people who are being saved, coming back to Jesus, people who are getting healed.  These people are getting on fire for Jesus and taking these cd’s and sharing them with their family, friends and neighbors.
  In the first verse of the song I wrote, “Outside this scarred up heart, inside a raging storm.  The Word is angered cause satan has declared a war.  I’ll fight this battle Lord, because you’re worth fightin’ for!”    As you listen to the song you will hear the heart’s cry of Rig Ministries!  The harder we work for Jesus the harder satan works to stop us.
 So what do we do when satan attacks?  We do what Jesus did!  He used His sword, the Word of God!  He would always answer with “it is written.”  That is our answer too!  We are to use the sword of the Lord on satan and his demons when they attack.  It is not a matter of if they will attack, but when they will attack.  So we must be prepared.     We must do what the scripture says and put on the full armor of God!  We are soldiers in God’s army and he has given us the very best weapons to use in this war!
And remember friends, Jesus loves you and we do too.  This is Chaplain Gary Rayburn and we will talk at you later!
